Overdue invoices in Stripe: where to find them and how to chase them

Stripe tracks every unpaid invoice and can send reminders on its own. Here’s where to look, which settings to turn on, and the point where you’ll need more than a reminder.

How Stripe marks an invoice overdue

Stripe doesn’t have an “overdue” status. An invoice that’s been finalized and not yet paid is open, however late it is. What changes is the badge the Dashboard shows.

BadgeWhat it means
Past dueStill open, and the due date has passed.
RetryingStill open, and Stripe is retrying a failed automatic payment.
PendingA payment has started and hasn’t landed yet. Don’t chase this one.
UncollectibleYou (or a rule) marked it unlikely to be paid.

Only invoices you send for the client to pay have a due date. Invoices Stripe charges automatically to a saved card don’t go past due; a failed charge goes into retries instead.

Finding your overdue invoices

  1. Open Invoices in the Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Filter by status using the tabs or filter chips at the top of the list, and look for the Past due badge.
  3. Click an invoice to see its history, the customer, and what’s been sent.
  4. To work through them in a spreadsheet, use Export for a CSV.

Checking that the invoice reached the right person? Each customer’s page shows a log of the emails Stripe sent them in the last 60 days.

Turning on Stripe’s automatic reminders

Stripe can email the customer about an unpaid invoice before, on, or after the due date. One-off and recurring invoices have separate settings.

One-off invoices

  1. Go to Settings › Billing › Invoices.
  2. Under Manage advanced invoicing features, turn on Send reminders if a one-off invoice hasn’t been paid.
  3. Click Add reminder for each reminder you want, and pick when it goes out from the list.

Recurring invoices

  1. Go to Settings › Billing › Subscriptions and emails.
  2. Under Manage invoices sent to customers, select Send reminders if a recurring invoice hasn’t been paid, and choose when.

Stripe skips a reminder if a payment on that invoice is already processing. Your logo and colors come from Settings › Branding, and if you’ve verified a custom email domain, reminders go out from it.

Resending an invoice by hand

Open the invoice and click Send invoice. Stripe shows a preview of the hosted invoice page, then emails it again. It’s the quickest nudge, and the client gets the same pay link as before.

Where Stripe’s reminders stop

Stripe’s reminders are free with Stripe Invoicing and fine for clients who pay after one nudge. They don’t do much for the ones who don’t.

  • They don’t escalate. Every reminder is Stripe’s own invoice email with your branding. There’s no firmer second email and no final notice with a date.
  • There’s no consequence. Nothing happens on day 14 that didn’t happen on day 1. A client can ignore them indefinitely.
  • The last setting is a write-off. Stripe can mark an invoice uncollectible after 30, 60 or 90 days past due. That tidies your books, but it doesn’t get you paid.
  • Smart Retries is a different problem. It retries failed card charges at better times. It doesn’t chase an invoice the client was meant to pay themselves.

When you need the next step, run a ladder: friendly, firmer, a final notice with a date, then a pause on the work. Stripe payment reminders vs. escalation compares the two side by side.
